The Railcar and the Ghost

Today's post describes a Chad Valley wooden (3-ply) jigsaw of 200 pieces, made between 1934 and 1938 at the company's premises in Harborne. One of the latest diesel railcars (No.4 made in 1933 by Park-Royal) is pictured with a ghostlike image of a 'King' class 4-6-0 locomotive No.6000 King George V on the adjacent track, behind. No.4 railcar is currently on show at the NRM in York. It was of a pioneering streamlined shape, and was fitted with a buffet counter to attract businessmen. It had an interesting, later existence - in 1966 No.4 was transferred to Swindon Corporation then onto Swindon Running Shed a year later. The Running Shed was simply a building at Swindon Works where locomotives were housed, serviced and prepared for service on the GWR network. Look up No. 4 diesel railcar on the internet. The jigsaw illustration indicates the future of rail travel at the time, with the GWR board envisaging cheaper journies on their easily maintained, diesel propelled, railcars. The title of the jigsaw is The Streamlined Way but the artist is not known to me.
